Fourteenth Annual Tom Potenza Memorial Golf Tournament

The Metrowest Detachment Tom Potenza Memorial Golf Tournament was played on August 18 at Juniper Hill Golf Course under sunny skies with ideal conditions.  The sold out tournament saw 37 teams take to the links for a day of golf and camaraderie, followed by a steak dinner, catered by Outback Steakhouse of Bellingham, held at the Natick Elks.  Many of those whose luck on the course did not hold up were later rewarded with victory in one of the many raffles and auctions that were conducted, thanks to generous donations of area businesses.  We encourage all to consider the tournament supporters when making decisions on shopping or services.
The tournament is named after the late Tom Potenza.  Tom was one of the originators of the tournament and a charter member of the detachment.  For over 10 years, he worked tirelessly to build the tournament to the point where it is now the primary fundraiser for the detachment.  We are proud to remember Tom with each rendition of the tournament that he worked so hard on.
A special note of thanks goes out to the committee of members who worked throughout the last few months to continue this fine event.  Ed Jolley, Mac MacEntegart, Jim Hastings, Bill Costello, and John Crisafulli invested a wealth of their time in meetings and activities to plan the days events, arrange ads and prizes, and package the materials that were distributed to players.  We are grateful for their commitment and effort in making this event happen.  A number of detachment members were active in selling advertising and arranging raffle prizes.  Members also stepped up by buying personal ads and selling raffle tickets. Paul Carew, John Donahue, John McGillivray, Chip Fagan, and Jack Callow were on hand on the day of the tournament to assist with registration and monitoring prize holes.   When we operate as a unit, the results are improved.  Congratulations to the golf committee and the detachment for a successful event that will greatly help our continued charitable outreach.

Fort Devens Cookouts

Cooking of lunch for the Marines of 1/25 at Fot Devens will continue on August 23.  Members are asked to arrive at 10:30.  Generally, this activity is complete by 2:00.  The Marine Corps League donates the food and labor and all profits are used to defer the cost of the Marine Corps Ball.  This is a great opportunity to interact with the Marines and to see the latest equipment.

National Junior Vice Commandants Award

The detachment has been awarded the National Junior Vice Commandant's Award for membership.   Past Massachusetts Department Commandant Warren Griffin accepted and delivered the award.

Meeting Schedule

We will resume the regular meeting schedule on Tuesday, September 16, at 7:30 PM at the Natick Amvets on Superior Drive.  We continue to improve on meeting attendance.  All are encouraged to attend and to invite new members whenever possible.
