 December Meeting Notes:

The December meeting was convened in the proper manner at 7:00 PM on 20 December.  The detachment is pleased at the return of Commandant Mike Whelan.  Mike has been recovering from major surgery and has been on sick call for a number of months.  It is good to have Mike back in the fold.
Roll call of officers was conducted.  The Sergent at Arms was not present, all other officers were in place.

Report of the Paymaster:

Paymaster Blanchette read out the current financial statements.  The detachment continues to be in good shape financially.  Due to errors in data entry and the timing of payment receipts, a number of members have been inadvertently dropped from membership.  To rectify this, those members will need to complete and submit a new application to be officially reinstated.  There was discussion about this and improvements that are needed in the management of roster information.  This has been an ongoing issue.

Reports of Members Sick or in Distress:

No new sicknesses were reported.  Good news on the recovery of Mike Whelan and successful treatment of Glenn Chambliss was reported.

Reports of Officers:

Senior Vice Commandant, Dave Gentes, formally resigned from office as his recent move to Rhode Island makes is difficult to realistically meet the responsibility of holding office.  Dave related that he would continue to contribute as possible from a remote location

Correspondence:

A request for donation was received from the Semper Fi Fund.  This was voted on and a donation was approved.  There was discussion of prior donations that have been made.

Reports of Standing Committees:

The Toys for Tots Campaign has been successfully completed.  Pods have been secured for pickup.  Volume of toys received has been estimated to be somewhat lower than past years but still strong given that Covid had impacted the last two years.  Chairperson Richard Douglas reported that there were some communications issues that could be improved but overall, the program was conducted smoothly.
The detachment is grateful the Richard Douglas and Chip Fagan who took the lead on this project.

Warren Griffin reported on the Rose Drive and provided information that Roche Brothers has removed their prohibition on collecting for this type of drive at Roche Brothers locations.  Warren reported that donations came in a good pace with more individuals donating larger amounts.

Iwo Jima Day will be observed at the State House on 21 February.  There will not be a parade and the observations will all be inside the State House.  Speakers are being firmed up now.

New Business:

A request was made to donate $600 to the Natick Veterans Council to address the needs of area veterans and families.  There was discussion about the most practical and accountable way for the detachment to participate in this type of funding more evenly across the Metrowest area.  After discussion, a motion was made to table this donation request until the next meeting so that clarification could be provided on the disbursement of funds and other potential donation channels.

A previously budgeted donation to the Blackstone Valley Young Marines was raised and approved. Chip Fagan delivered Christmas cards that had been prepared and sent to the detachment from the Young Marines.

Al Schiff, a long-time member reported that he will be moving to Delaware to live with family.  Al has resided in Natick for over 60 years and recounted stories of his wife who was a foreign service officer.  Al served during the Korean conflict and was at the infamous battle at the Chosin Reservoir.  Al has been instrumental in detachment outreach to area Boy Scouts and a dependable attendee at meetings and events.  He will be missed, and we wish him the best going forward.

The meeting was adjourned following protocol and attendees were able to enjoy a variety of food options.  The detachment wishes all members and supporters a rewarding and safe holiday season and will meet again on the third Tuesday of January, January 17, 2023.

 From the Leadership Team:

Attendance at the November meeting was insufficient to meet the quorum requirement for conducting business. As such, informal discussion was held on topics that need to be addressed in the near term. At this time of year, the Toys for Tots campaign is the primary item of business. Information as of now is that a pod has been placed at the Natick Elks and that boxes are available in that pod. It is appropriate to be in touch with contacts at collection points so that arrangements can be made for pickups. This campaign is a large, national undertaking and will operate within a tight timeframe with completion of collections approximately two weeks before Christmas. This is necessary to enable the steps of sorting and packing for delivery. This detachment has typically been a strong contributor to this program, and we hope to continue.

Detachment membership and participation has been dwindling over the past few years. We have tried to take steps to attract and retain members, especially younger members. As our older members move on or face health problems, it becomes a challenge to effectively provide the services and activities that have been characteristic of this detachment. There is a proud record of service to the community and the Marine Corps over the past 22 years. It is our sincere desire to continue but there are a number of realities that determine our ability to do so. If you are a member, a prior member, or a supporter of the Marine Corps League, we would welcome your coming to a meeting to give us your input on what you would like to see. If coming to a meeting is difficult, we would welcome your contacting us with ideas. Initial contact can be made at davegentes @comcast.net.  We will see that your input is directed to the full leadership team.

Our next meeting will be on December 20th at 7:00 PM at the Natick Amvets at 79 Superior Drive in Natick.  This is an opportunity to be heard.  We look forward to seeing you there.

247th Marine Corps Birthday Celebration
10 November 2022

On 10 November, 25 Marines and supporters of the Corps assembled to observe the 247th birthday of the Marine Corps.  Paymaster Gerry Blanchette officiated at the event and guided attendees through the traditional activities of this event.  After the posting of the colors, Gerry read the birthday message of General Berger, the current Commandant.  Following the reading, a video of current Marine Corps activities around the world was shown.

At the completion of the video, Warren Griffin, detachment Judge Advocate and National Senior Vice Commandant, read the orders of General John Lejeune that summarizes the history of the Marine Corps and is mandated to be read at all Marine Corps Commands on the birthday of the Corps.

This picture shows Gerry Blanchette watching as Warren Griffin reads the order of General Lejeune.

Following this reading.  The traditional cake cutting ceremony was conducted.  The oldest Marine present was Al Schiff of Natick.  Al is a long- time detachment member and a Korean War veteran with combat service at Chosin Reservoir.  AL used the provided NCO sword to cut the cake.  After cutting the cake, Al served the first piece to Ethan Padone who at 22 was the youngest attending Marine.

At the conclusion of the cake cutting, Gerry Blanchette called for the retirement of the colors and a social period was enjoyed by attendees.  The detachment appreciates the effort made by Gerry to secure the hall for this event and his leadership in conducting the ceremony, as well as those who were part of making this traditional event a success.

From the Leadership Team:

Sick Call

Commandant Michael Whelan has recently had surgery to address a heart problem.  So far, the information on his condition is that he is progressing well.  The detachment continues to keep Mike in our thoughts and prayers and hope for a speedy recovery.

Marine Corps Birthday Observation

With fellow Marines from all generations and all over the world, the detachment will celebrate the 247th Marine Corps Birthday.  We will meet at the Framingham Elks Lodge at 450 Union Avenue in Framingham on 10 November at 1800 (6 PM).  We will have the readings of the Commandant's message and Marine Corps Order 47, Series 1921, issued by General Lejeune. The order summarized the history, mission, and tradition of the Corps, and directed that it be read to every command on 10 November each subsequent year in honor of the birthday of the Marine Corps. This order has been duly carried out since then.  The traditional cutting of the cake will be conducted.  This is an opportunity to join with your fellow Marines, Corpsmen, and Chaplains to observe the Marine Corps Birthday. We encourage all members to attend and to invite family, friends, and potential members.  We look forward to seeing you then.

The detachment is continuing to meet in person on the third Tuesday of each month at the Natick AMVETS on Superior Drive in Natick.  Increasing attendance at meetings is an ongoing objective.  The opportunity to bring your energy and ideas and to participate in planning future activities.  Making an active effort to attend scheduled meetings and to invite potential members will contribute to the future of the detachment.

 From the Detachment Leadership Team:

September 2022:

A core of members showed up for the September meeting but we did not meet the minimum number that allows us to conduct business.  As a detachment, we are financially sound and prepared to contribute.  The next meeting is set for October 18.  We encourage all to make an effort to attend and participate.

A lot of factors are coming together to bring us to an important juncture in the detachment’s history.  First and foremost, we continue to hope for optimal outcomes for our Commandant, Mike Whelan.  Mike has been facing some serious medical challenges and is awaiting surgery.  Please keep Mike and his family in your thoughts and prayers.  Mike is a mainstay in the Hopkinton veterans’ community, an American Legion Case Officer, a regional sports official, and an all-around good guy.  We wish him the best.

We have had several years of decreasing membership.  Our active members have accomplished a lot in organizing burger burns at Fort Devens, operating an active Toys for Tots program, providing a dignified presence at funerals, and assisting local communities as needed.  One thing that continues to be needed is “boots on the ground.”  As a detachment, we have strong interest in attracting new members, both regular members and associate members.  More importantly, we are hoping to retain and engage new members.   Each potential member may bring energy to accomplish something.  There are a lot of activities that we can consider and support if we can get some energy behind it.  Be aware as you interact and meet new people.  Anyone who has the motivation to be part of contributing to the veterans’ community could be a valuable asset and should be welcomed.

Veteran’s organizations throughout the country are facing the issue of an aging membership and the reluctance of younger potential members to step up.  Making membership an attractive option to the next wave of Marines is the challenge that we face.  The next generation may have different interests and ideas but it is their time to take over these organizations and to shape them to fit their needs.  We can contribute by being open to new ideas and ways of doing things.  At each Marine Corps Birthday, the youngest and oldest Marines serve the cake to each other as a symbol of the respect that each generation grants to the other.  We fought our battles and served in our times.  The next wave of members has had a different experience but the same root experience of the Marine Corps and its core values.  We can pass the torch knowing that we completed the mission and the turnover can be smooth.

A Note from the Detachment Leadership

We have heard recently that Commandant Mike Whalen is facing health issues and awaiting a significant medical procedure.  Mike is a past Commandant and formerly held a number of other leadership positions in the detachment.  He was gracious enough to accept the role of Commandant again.
In addition to the Marine Corps League, Mike is active in his local American Legion post and is employed as an American Legion Service Officer.   Additionally, Mike works as an official in area football and baseball leagues.  We encourage all to keep Mike Whalen in their thoughts and prayers as he faces this health challenge, and we hope for a successful resolution.

The Metrowest Detachment will resume meetings on Tuesday September 20th at 7:00 PM at the Natick Amvets.  Please plan to attend.  If you have friends, neighbors, co-workers or other contacts who have interest in regular or Associate membership, please invite them to attend also.  Associate membership is open to anyone who has interest in participating in supporting the MCL and the Marine Corps and their interest and involvement is welcome.  We will continue to support Toys for Tots, VA Hospital Bingo, Cookouts for the 25th Marines, and other activities that can benefit from the energy of Associate Members.  Contacts who are active duty or honorably discharged Marines, FMF Corpsmen, or FMF Chaplains are eligible for regular membership.  Increased participation will enable us to continue our long history of support to the veteran community.

The possibilities that we have for detachment activities are limited only by the commitment and energy of our membership.  Each of us can be part of growing the detachment and making it healthier.  Please come to meetings with ideas and all will be explored.

Semper Fi.

 Attention on Deck!!!

With the arrival of the Labor Day weekend, we confront the end of summer and the return to normal scheduled activities.  We will resume meetings at the Natick AMVETS on Tuesday, September 20 at 7:00 PM (1900 Hrs).  The detachment will welcome the attendance of all members and potential members. We are fortunate to have a strong core of committed members who are active participants, and we would like to add to that core.  Take advantage of the opportunity to reach out to Marines, Corpsmen, Chaplains, and family members and encourage them to join and participate in MCL activities.  During this year, we will focus on increasing membership and participation in detachment activities.  We are looking forward to a successful year.

Marines,

The next detachment meeting- March 15, 2022 will be an important meeting as a lot of detachment business needs to be discussed.  With the Governor's recent removal of mask mandates and the easing of COVID, it will be easier to attend and to participate in detachment decisions.  All members are encouraged to attend and to be active in making contact with potential new members.

We are in the planning stages for the annual golf tournament.  This is where we got most of our funds.  To run a successful tournament is a big undertaking.  We have been fortunate to have committed leaders over the 20 years that this tournament has been held but we need to get as many members and supporters involved as possible.

In addition, members wishing to make nominations for Detachment Marine of the Year can send nomination information to the Commandant at the following address:  22 Potter Road, Framingham, MA 01701.   Nominations should include a statement of the activities of your nominee's activities in the detachment and the community.   Any voting member in good standing can be nominated.  Past Marine of the Year recipients will meet to select this year's recipient after the April meeting.

Marines,

Please plan on attending the next detachment meeting- February 15, 2022.

The detachment sock drive is turning out to be a great success. I have over 300 pairs at my house. Jim Hastings has more since Bellingham has adopted the drive. More from Jim at the meeting. I want to thank my family and friends and Detachment members who have made this a success.  Socks are very much in demand for VA patients and these donations will be greatly appreciated.

We tried shooting last month after the meeting and we had fun.  Members showed some skills but there is room for improvement! I will bring the pistols again to the next meeting and we will see if more practice helps.

Nominations for the Detachment officers will occur next month. All positions are open. Any member in good standing is eligible to be nominated. It is time for new blood, please if you are interested step up. For this Detachment to grow, we need young people to get involved.  If you know of potential members, invite them to come to a meeting or to contact any of the detachment officers for more information.

The nomination process for Detachment Marine of the Year will begin next month. Any member in good standing can be nominated. Marine of the Year is a person who is dedicated to ideas and values of the Marine Corps League. From the Commandant:

January 2022

January 1, 1968, 54 years ago, was the year of the Monkey for some of us.  We celebrated by keeping our heads down for the next year. We lost friends we had just made in the Marine Corps in Viet Nam. I will never forget New Year's Day 1968. Some of my fellow young Marines never got the chance to fall in love, get married, become parents, go to college, find a career, or watch their kids grow up. Never forget these Marines. They are in my memory and dreams every day.

At the January 18 and February 15 meetings, the detachment will be collecting socks for needy and homeless Vets. Bring new socks to the meeting in January and February.  Socks are one of the most highly requested items for these veterans and your donations will go a long way to give them some comfort.

Warren has sent out another letter to delinquent regular members.  Please be prepared to pay your dues of $30.00 on time, prior to August 31.  Life membership is a good way to meet this need once and for all.

After the meeting on January 18, we will try our skills at target shooting with pellet pistols in the AMVETS hall.  We will see if we still remember what we learned in the Corps!  This will be an enjoyable and memorable experience, and all are encouraged to attend and participate.

With the ongoing COVID pandemic and recent increases due to the Omicron variant, we will encourage social distancing and wearing of a mask during meetings.  This disease continues to persist so please get vaccinated and boosted if you haven’t already.  The VA and other locations offer vaccines.

To help with planning, please make note of the meeting dates for 2022:  18 January: 15 February: 15 March:  19 April:  17 May: 21 June: (no meetings in July and August):  20 September: 18 October:
